The Truth Behind AI Course Creation: Breaking Down the Hype
Mar 13, 2024
Don't believe the hype. You cannot, I repeat, cannot use ChatGPT and Canva to create a high-selling course in 37 seconds and then sit back and watch the money roll into your Stripe account while you sip cocktails on a beach in the Caribbean.
Yes, Course Creation and the creator economy are fast-growing industries, with Goldman Sachs predicting it could become a half-trillion-dollar industry by 2027. But let's break this down first, because very soon, I will share with you the one mindset change that allows you to become a seven-figure course creator.
While all that is exciting for all creators, here are some hard facts that came out of the 'State of Creators 24 Report for 2024': 96% of creators earn less than $100k a year. So despite what ads or posts you are seeing, there is only a 4% chance any creator you see online is actually earning more than $100k a year.
This brings me back to my opening line of using ChatGPT & Canva to make a course scam. Now, in no way am I denying the power of these AI tools, and while personally, I think that course creators should create courses from their own knowledge rather than 100% from AI tools, I am happy to concede on that point.
The big reason why this is a scam is that it does not cover how to sell courses profitably. When you dive into more of the promos, you see that they are using ads. Now, I have been involved in Google Ads since 2010 - in fact, right now I have the largest Google Ads-only channel on Youtube - so I can speak to this.
When you break down their data, you see that in the best-case scenario, these $49 courses that they are selling usually mean that they are having to spend $30 - $40 on ad spend for a sale. Even if they got that down to $15 a sale, they would then have to make $300k in revenue to get $100k before tax or any other costs. You see what I mean, and this is why only 4% of creators are truly earning six-figure salaries.
In the last 2 years, I have become a seven-figure course creator and online coach, and I didn't even start to use paid ads until I was already at over $85k in sales per month. How did I and other true six-figure course creators do this?
Because we don’t see ourselves as YouTube creators. We use YouTube to build our business. The goal is not to have a YT channel with millions of subscribers; the goal is to have a YT channel that generates thousands of leads every month.
