How to Start Your Journey to Becoming a 7-Figure Content Creator
Sep 04, 2024Are you dreaming of becoming a successful content creator but feel stuck, unsure where to start? You're not alone. Beginning a new venture, especially in the world of content creation, can be overwhelming. However, with the right steps, you can turn your passion into a thriving business.
Why Starting as a Content Creator Feels Challenging
Starting something new is hard—there’s no denying that. Even experienced professionals can feel paralyzed when faced with the challenge of breaking into content creation. Just recently, I reconnected with a friend who has seen my transformation into a 7-figure content creator over the past two years. Despite his 30 years of experience in launching organizations across three countries, starting businesses, and holding an MBA, he felt stuck when it came to content creation.
If someone with that level of experience can feel frozen, it's understandable for anyone to feel overwhelmed. But the key to success lies in breaking down the process into manageable, actionable steps.
Step 1: Focus on Building an Audience on One Channel
One of the biggest mistakes new content creators make is trying to be everywhere at once—YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, podcasts, Facebook, LinkedIn, and more. But unless you have a full content team, trying to conquer all these platforms simultaneously will lead to burnout and scattered efforts.
Instead, focus on mastering one platform first. Choose one content format that aligns with your strengths and interests. For instance, you could start with a podcast that you also post on YouTube and other podcast platforms like Spotify. By concentrating your efforts on one channel, you can refine your content and better understand what your audience wants.
If you’re just starting out and building your audience from scratch, consider focusing on long-form content ranging from 8 to 30 minutes. Why? Because when you're new, you’re unlikely to get a ton of views right away. The power of long-form content lies in its ability to engage deeply with a smaller audience—quality engagement often matters more than sheer numbers.
Step 2: Plan Your First 6 Months of Content
Planning is crucial to avoid the “what should I post next?” dilemma that often derails new content creators. Without a clear content strategy, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and miss posting deadlines.
Dedicate 3-4 hours to map out your first six months of content. This doesn’t have to be a complex process. Simply choose a posting schedule you can stick to consistently. For example, I release two videos a week, but you might decide to start with one video per week. The key is consistency—pick a schedule that you can maintain long-term.
Avoid the temptation to overcommit, like aiming for four videos a week for a few weeks and then burning out. Consistency is critical for growth. It's better to release one video a week consistently than to post sporadically.
Step 3: Grow Your Database, Not Just Your Audience
While a growing subscriber count is exciting, the most important metric isn’t your number of subscribers—it’s how many of those viewers convert into members of your database.
Your database is your most valuable asset because it’s where you can directly market your products and services. This approach allows you to keep your content focused on providing value to your audience, while reserving promotions and sales pitches for your database.
To grow your database, offer a high-value lead magnet—something your audience finds genuinely useful. This could be an e-book, a checklist, a workout or diet plan, or an extra video masterclass. The key is to offer something that solves a specific problem or provides significant value in exchange for the user’s email.
Step 4: Monetize with Online Courses, Communities, or Coaching Products
Once you’ve built a loyal audience and a solid database, it’s time to monetize. The most effective way to do this is by creating online courses, communities, or coaching products that you can offer directly to your database.
These products allow you to share your knowledge, build deeper connections with your audience, and generate significant revenue.
